[Matthias looks down at his hands. Under the ink stains are old scars. He rubs the pad of his thumb against each fingertip in turn, feeling the armored callouses.]
Maybe. I mean, yeah, I s'ppose.
[He isn't all that good at casually lying. Even he can hear the doubt in his voice. So he pushes past it--]
Anyway, Riftwatch is fairly brilliant, even if there's a war on. Better'n other situations. For starters, you get paid.
[ How curious. Even among the People of the Silent Plains, the general attitude was war is hell, even though we're doing good work. It's odd to hear someone who so clearly doesn't believe that. - Or maybe it's not that he feels a love for the war, but just for trying to free his people? That she does understand. ]
I've never used money before. It seems sort of complicated.
[Happy to move on, but also, happy to spread the word on this--]
Nah, s'not. And it's brilliant besides, especially if you've not had it or, y'know, used it. You can get all sorts of things. Here, I'll tell you what, when you get your first bit of pay, I'll take you into Kirkwall and help you learn to spend it.
Food--good food, like, at a proper tavern--and drink, if you like--and boots, and a good cloak, and a dagger--or whatever it is you use, I dunno what you prefer, or if you even use weapons, and we've got some here, standard-issue, but they aren't good--you can't really get staffs too easily in Kirkwall but you might find 'em sometimes, if the right sort of merchant comes in--I've not ever found one I liked, so I haven't, but you might--and you've got a room of your own, haven't you? You're not sleeping in one of the dormitory rooms?
I thought that first as well. You might try out different beds--some of 'em aren't as soft, especially in the dormitory rooms what no one sleeps in. And then you can trade it out. Er, that's if you actually want to sleep on a mattress, you could sleep outdoors if you like. Except when it gets cold, 'course. Then I reckon you won't want to as much.
Dunno. 'Cos that's what happens when it gets seriously, seriously cold. It can happen to your fingers and ears and nose as well. Even your cheeks can get frozen and fall off.
Face-cheeks. S'ppose it might happen to arse-cheeks as well. Eurgh.
[Very serious,] Oh, no, I can't stop, not when it's something you've got to be warned about when the cold comes. You don't want to be caught unawares, d'you? You've got to be warned. You've got to think about it.
[Relenting, he was once very new and didn't know anything, nothing's gained by being cruel--]
--only a little serious. It can happen, freezing your arse black, or until it falls straight off. But it's not likely to. We've got fires and blankets and hot baths and the rooms in the Gallows are drafty, but they aren't that drafty. And you can get warm clothes, that'll keep you safe as well. So you ought to be all right, really.

Just because - my bed's really soft. Sort of too soft.
